Children's Ministry

Spring is one of my most favorite seasons of the year.  Why spring you might ask especially here in Ohio when the weather is cold and rainy one day and warm and sunny the next?  Where you can't figure out how to dress when you wake up and it is 32 degrees and by the afternoon, it is 58 degrees.  If you put all the crazy weather aside, spring is a wonderful season; it is the season of new beginnings, of new life. In the spring we celebrate Easter.  During the children's sermon yesterday, Kathy Stocker shared with the children the following:

"There are many things that remind us of Easter.  There are flowers, chocolate Easter bunnies, and pretty Easter baskets.  One thing that all of us think of when we think of Easter is Easter eggs.  How many of you have ever been on an Easter egg hunt?   Have you ever wondered why we use the egg to represent Easter? When a mother hen sits on her eggs for a few weeks, do you know what happens?  That's right, in a few weeks the eggs begin to crack open and little baby chick come out.  An egg means new life.  It reminds us that there is a new life inside that can come out.  We celebrate Easter Sunday because that is the day that Jesus came out of the grave and He was alive."

Easter means new life, new beginnings.  Everything that was dormant during the winter months starts coming alive again during the spring.  The drabness of winter disappears and the bright colors of the trees and flowers start appearing.

Spring also means VBS to me.  You are probably saying why VBS, that isn't until the week of June 4th. Well, that is true but this is the time of year where the group of churches gets together and start creating the big VBS sets for the stages and the sanctuaries. Volunteers from all the churches start meeting at Sharonville UMC every Sat morning and Sunday evenings from now until the end of May.  We also help each other come up with ideas for decorating the rest of the church and coordinate the pickup and delivery of the decorations.  VBS registration for participants and volunteers is open, supplies are being purchased and the donations board is being created ready to go in the Narthex soon.  VBS is a church wide event that teaches and reaches many in our Community.  We have many families who attend our VBS and love it so much that they have attended for many years.   This year's theme is "Shipwrecked, Rescued By Jesus."  We will be having a Decoration Creation Party on April 29th for anyone who would like to help make the smaller and medium size decorations we will be using around the church for VBS from 11am-2pm.  We will have something for any skill set to do and we will provide lunch too. All ages welcome.

So when you think about spring, try not to think about the crazy weather. Try to think about what spring brings us; it brings us the promise of new beginnings, of new life and new possibilities.  In children's ministry there are always new possibilities to share ones faith and ones talents with our children.
